Mental Health for Foster Families: How 'Inside Out' gets it right!
Mental health for foster families is a hugely important conversation and one close to my heart. Today I'm sharing my own experiences as well as how I am handling mental health, therapy and open conversations around emotions with my kids and foster kids in the home. We also went to see the new Inside Out movie this week, which was a perfect combination to share with you on the importance of mental health.

    Whose Bethany? Your name is Whitney! Last I knew, you dont talk about what or if your children receive services. 🤔 I think they missed the point of your channel. I think Darcy is the cutest! I dont know that I've heard Sawyer talk. In any case your a great mom and YOU know whats best for your family

    Thank you for taking her in. We took in one of my high school students for six months during her family crisis and it was more expensive than I was expecting. She was 17 and I really wanted her to be able to get her high school diploma. You’re doing a good thing. I have four kids, ages 20 - 30 and they still require help and support. Kicking kids out at 18 because it’s some magical ‘adult’ age is one of the myriad of stupid things we do to them.

    I understand you've taken in an adult, prior-foster-child, to live with you for a time. I get that you are emphasizing both they are an adult and (in another video/clip) they are still just 18. They still need help, guidance and support.

    I have only had long placements and respite. I can say we are fully into a routine but reunification will be very hard after 2 years…. For everyone including extended family. Those emotions on top of my and of course most important… the child can be a lot to manage.

    Between 18-21 young adults need to be transitioned to independence. A lot of parents in the US fail at this, because they are not able to transition to living with young adults. The rules of the home become the parents personal boundaries. I need to go to bed at midnight, and for my peace of mind, I need to know everyone is in and the doors are locked, so please be home by midnight. I don’t want to waste food, so please let me know if you are eating with me or with friends, so I don’t have to eat the same leftovers for a week. I will do your laundry for you today if you bring it to the laundry room, or you can do it yourself on Thursday after I finish my loads… With children we control their scheduled, with young adults they control their schedules within the boundaries of people they are responsible to - parents, employers, teachers, administrators, etc. The keys are respect and responsibility- if you don’t give them either, they are going to learn adulting the hard way.

    I love working with teens, even ones coming out of tough situations like homelessness. -Sometimes there are issues with anger, drugs, or behaviour, but if you gain a teen's trust, you have their whole heart. They have great taste in music, always say yes to a lazy night in with pizza. Teens are a source of absolute joy and pride to foster, because their wins are so very, very hard-won.

    I was in foster care from 11 months old until 3 1/2 when my adoption was finalized one thing I do know is life has been a struggle as I came from a traumatic childhood so needing parents who were trauma informed was essential however I didn’t have that now I’m 27 in extensive trauma therapy trying to deal with traumas I don’t even remember so please if you are foster/adopting get trauma informed before getting your first placement. If you already have a placement talk to your county about trauma informed parenting training!

    My biggest thing I tell people because I worked for cps and then foster care is know that these children have behaviors 90 percent of the time because they have not had a normal childhood or structure so to know teens may be harder because of that but to know your limits .

    You are this child's mother now. Or mother figure or second mom however you look at it it's still a mom figure. And it's very hard out in the world without parental figures I've been there a few times without support and it's so difficult. Now thankfully I have God so I'm not worried. But some people don't even have God or don't trust him so to have a person in this world and a connection that you can trust is incredibly helpful especially for a vulnerable child and yes they are still a child at 18 they're just not mature enough especially not in our society.

    • @waffles3629
      @waffles3629 11 днів тому

      Exactly. Like let's say the kids do have speech impediments (no idea if they do, just going for a hypothetical here), speech therapy takes time, I did speech therapy for a couple years. So they could be in speech therapy and working on it. It's not an overnight change. Many people don't think about it, but you have to learn how to talk, it's a learned skill you must practice.

    • @waffles3629
      @waffles3629 11 днів тому

      @@delennamachoo yep. It seems very common with vloggers. They can show one meal they made for their family for a mini party and people will flip out and accuse them of feeding their kids junk food 24/7. People like that need to get a life, even for daily vloggers you're seeing what? 15-30 minutes of their day? That's a snapshot.

    Bethany, why do you refuse to and completely ignore your children’s very apparent detrimental speech impediment?? You are doing such a disservice to these poor, beautiful children and it’s going to follow them for all of their lives. They cannot go through life not knowing how to pronounce an R properly, it’s just shameful. They are both way way too old to be speaking this way. Tragic!

      @protectthevulnerable 13 днів тому

      Please try to remember that this is just a few minutes out of one day in a very long life. I'm sure she is doing her best and she may even already have methods/therapists/etc in place to help them. She hasn't spoken about it as far as I know, so we just don't know. Sometimes even with speech therapy, some people will never speak how you want them to. It's not a detriment, they will be just fine even if they experience challenges. Even though you may feel a need to help these kids, you are not required to know every detail of their life or really any of it. She is not beholden to give us any of us information, please respect that. From what I've seen, she is much better at respecting her own children's privacy than some other content creators and I admire that immensely.

      You have no idea what they're doing outside of videos. But also, R is a notoriously difficult sound to correct in speech therapy and if you don't have the muscle to curl your tongue, you can be 8 or older before you figure it out. I've seen Darcy read fluently and express herself clearly in the videos, I don't think there's a big developmental issue that's being ignored other than an extremely mild speech issue. that will likely self correct.

This channel is not here for you to attack my children or my parenting and it will not be tolerated. I love this movie too! My 9 year old is autistic and has extreme anxiety. This movie was a great way to visually see how anxiety does have a place in our lives and is a healthy emotion but we can’t let it overtake our joy or change our authentic selves. It pairs perfectly with things children learn in therapy.
